The Meaning of As-Sirat Al-Mustaqim, the Straight Path

As for the meaning of As-Sirat Al-Mustaqim, Imam Abu Jafar At-Tabari said,

“The Ummah agreed that Sirat Al-Mustaqim, is the clear path without branches, according to the language of the Arabs. For instance, Jarir bin `Atiyah Al-Khatafi said in a poem,

`The Leader of the faithful is on a path that will remain straight even though the other paths are crooked.”

At-Tabari also stated that, “There are many evidences to this fact.”

At-Tabari then proceeded,

“The Arabs use the term, Sirat in reference to every deed and statement whether righteous or wicked. Hence the Arabs would describe the honest person as being straight and the wicked person as being crooked.

The straight path mentioned in the Qur’an refers to Islam.”

Imam Ahmad recorded in his Musnad that An-Nawwas bin Sam`an said that the Prophet said,

Allah has set an example:

a Sirat (straight path) that is surrounded by two walls on both sides, with several open doors within the walls covered with curtains. There is a caller on the gate of the Sirat who heralds,

‘O people! Stay on the path and do not deviate from it.’

Meanwhile, a caller from above the path is also warning any person who wants to open any of these doors,

‘Woe unto you! Do not open it, for if you open it you will pass through.’

  • The straight path is Islam,
  • the two walls are Allah’s set limits,
  • while the doors resemble what Allah has prohibited.
  • The caller on the gate of the Sirat is the Book of Allah,
  • while the caller above the Sirat is Allah’s admonishment in the heart of every Muslim.

Narrated by Usama (radhi-Allahu-’anhu) :

Allah’s Messenger (salla-Allaahu-’alayhi-wa-sallam) said :

“I stood at the gate of Jannah (Paradise) and saw that the majority of the people who entered it were the poor, while the wealthy were stopped at the gate (for the accounts). But the companions of the Fire were ordered to be taken to the Fire. Then I stood at the gate of the Fire and saw that the majority of those who entered it were women.”

Narrated by Usama (radhi-Allahu-’anhu) :

During the lifetime of Allah’s Messenger (salla-Allaahu-’alayhi-wa-sallam), the sun eclipsed. Allah’s Messenger (salla-Allaahu-’alayhi-wa-sallam) offered the prayer of (the) eclipse and so did the people along with him.

He performed a long Qiyam (standing posture) during which Surat-al-Baqara could have been recited; then he performed a pro-longed bowing, then raised his head and stood for a long time which was slightly less than that of the first Qiyam (and recited Qur’an). Then he performed a prolonged bowing again but the period was shorter than the period of the first bowing, then he stood up and then prostrated. Again he stood up, but this time the period of standing was less than the first standing. Then he performed a prolonged bowing but of a lesser duration than the first, then he stood up again for a long time but for a lesser duration than the first. Then he performed a prolonged bowing but of lesser duration than the first, and then he again stood up, and then prostrated and then finished his prayer. By then the sun eclipse had cleared.

Allah’s Messenger (salla-Allaahu-’alayhi-wa-sallam) then said, “The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, and they do not eclipse because of the death or birth of someone, so when you observe the eclipse, remember Allah (offer the eclipse prayer).

They (the people) said, “O Allah’s Messenger ! We saw you stretching your hand to take something at this place of yours, then we saw you stepping backward.

He said, “I saw Paradise (or Paradise was shown to me), and I stretched my hand to pluck a bunch (of grapes), and had I plucked it, you would have eaten of it as long as this world exists. Then I saw the (Hell) Fire, and I have never before, seen such a horrible sight as that, and I saw that the majority of its dwellers were women.

The people asked, “O Allah’s Messenger ! What is the reason for that ?

He replied, “Because of their ungratefulness.

It was said. “Do they disbelieve in Allah (are they ungrateful to Allah) ?

He replied, “They are not thankful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favors done to them. Even if you do good to one of them all your life, when she seems some harshness from you, she will say, “I have never seen any good from you.’

Narrated by Anas ibnu Malik (RA) :

Allaah’s Messenger (SAW) said :

Nobody who enters Jannah (Paradise) likes to go back to the world even if he got everything on the earth, except a Mujahid who wishes to return to the world so that he may be martyred ten times because of the dignity he receives (from Allaah).

Narrated by Abu Musa Al-’Ashari (RA) :

I performed ablution in my house and then went out and said :

Today I shall stick to Allaah’s Messenger and stay with him all this day of mine (in his service).

I went to the Mosque and asked about Allaah’s Messenger (SAW). They said :

He had gone in this direction.

So I followed his way, asking about him till he entered a place called Bir Aris. I sat at its gate that was made of date-palm leaves till Allaah’s Messenger (SAW) finished answering the call of nature and performed ablution. Then I went up to him to see him sitting at the well of Aris at the middle of its edge with his legs uncovered, hanging in the well.

I greeted him and went back and sat at the gate. I said :

Today I will be the gatekeeper of Allaah’s Messenger.

Abu Bakr (RA) came and pushed the gate. I asked :

Who is it ?

He said :

Abu Bakr.

I told him to wait, went in and said :

O Allaah’s Messenger ! Abu Bakr asks for permission to enter.

He said :

Admit him and give him the glad tidings that he will be in Paradise.

So I went out and said to Abu Bakr (RA) :

Come in, and Allah’s Messenger gives you the glad tidings that you will be in Paradise.

Abu Bakr entered and sat on the right side of Allaah’s Messenger (SAW) on the built edge of the well and hung his legs n the well as Allaah’s Messenger (SAW) did and uncovered his legs.

I then returned and sat (at the gate). I had left my brother performing ablution and he intended to follow me. So I said (to myself) :

If Allaah wants good for so-and-so (i.e. my brother), He will bring him here.

Suddenly somebody moved the door. I asked :

Who is it ?

He said :

‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab.

I told him to wait, went in and said :

O Allaah’s Messenger ! ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab asks for permission to enter.

He said :

Admit him and give him the glad tidings that he will be in Paradise.

So I went out and said to ‘Umar (RA) :

Come in, and Allah’s Messenger gives you the glad tidings that you will be in Paradise.

So he entered and sat beside Allaah’s Messenger (SAW) on the built edge of the well on the left side and hung his legs in the well.

I returned and sat (at the gate) and said (to myself) :

If Allaah wants good for so-and-so, He will bring him here.

Suddenly somebody moved the door. I asked :

Who is it ?

He said :

‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan.

I told him to wait, went in and informed him.

He said :

Admit him, give him the glad tidings of entering Paradise after a calamity that will befall him.

So I went up to him and said :

Come in, Allaah’s Messenger give you the glad tidings of entering Paradise after a calamity that will befall you.

He praised Allah and said :

I seek Allah’s Aid.

‘Uthman then came in and found that the built edge of the well was occupied, so he sat opposite to Allaah’s Messenger (SAW) on the other side.

Sa’id ibn Al-Musaiyab said :

I interpret this (narration) in terms of their graves.

Today I read a story that made me to remember my son.

Inna lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji’oon

Al-Tirmidhi (942) narrated that Abu Sinaan (RA) said :

I buried my son Sinaan and Abu Talhah al-Khoolaani was sitting at the graveside. When I wanted to go out he took my hand and said, “Shall I not give you some glad tidings, O Abu Sinaan ?

I said, “Yes.”

He said, “Al-Dahhaak ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn ‘Arzab narrated to me from Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari that the Messenger of Allaah (SAW) said :

“When a person’s child dies, Allaah says to His angels, ‘You have taken the child of My slave.’

They say, ‘Yes.’

He says, ‘You have taken the apple of his eye.’

They say, ‘Yes.’

He says, ‘What did My slave say ?’

They say, ‘He praised you and said “Inna lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji’oon (Verily to Allaah we belong and unto Him is our return).’

Allaah says, ‘Build for My slave a house in Paradise and call it the house of praise.’

The Question

Objection to the fact that a man will have hoor al-’ayn who will share her husband with her

What happens in paradise, with a couple who have been married ? I have heard that the wife will be with her husband, but that the husband will in addition to her, have 70 women (hoor al-’ayn) at his service.

This to me does not seem like a fair concept for the women, to share their husbands in this way.

The Answer

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly :

The believer must submit to the rulings and decrees of Allaah (SWT). Allaah (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning) :

The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allaah (His Words, Al-Qur’an) and His Messenger, to judge between them, is that they say: ‘We hear and we obey’. And such are the successful (who will live forever in Paradise)

[ al-Noor 24 : 51 ]

If the believer is confused about anything in the rulings of Allaah (SWT), and he does not know what it means or what the reason behind it is, then he must say as those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say:

We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord

[ al-‘Imraan 3 : 7 ]

It is not permissible for the believer to say that one of the rulings of Allaah (SWT) is not fair; exalted be Allaah (SWT) far above that. Allaah (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning) :

And your Lord is not at all unjust to (His) slaves

[ al-Fussilat 41 : 46 ]

There is no rule that is better than the rule of Allaah (SWT). Allaah (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning) :

Is not Allaah the Best of judges?

[ at-Teen 95 : 8 ]

Do they then seek the judgement of (the days of) Ignorance ? And who is better in judgement than Allaah for a people who have firm Faith ?

[ al-Maa’idah 5 : 50 ]

Secondly :

In this question there are two mistakes and a misunderstanding. The first mistake is where the questioner says that in Paradise a man will have seventy hoor al-’ayn. What is proven in the saheeh Sunnah is that the martyr (shaheed) will have seventy-two hoor al-’ayn. The least of the people of Paradise will have two wives, and some will have more than that.

Narrated by al-Miqdaam ibnu Ma’di Yakrib (RA) :

Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said,

The martyr has six blessings with Allaah :

  • he will be forgiven from the first drop of blood shed;
  • he will be shown his place in Paradise;
  • he will be protected from the torment of the grave; he will be safe from the greater terror;
  • a crown of dignity will be placed on his head, one ruby of which is better than this world and everything in it;
  • he will be married to seventy-two wives from al-hoor al-‘ayn;
  • and he will intercede for seventy of his relatives.

[ at-Tirmidhi, 1663; Ibn Maajah, 2799; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh at-Tirmidhi ]

And more than that has been narrated. Abu Na’eem narrated in Sifat al-Jannah from Abu Hurayrah (RA) :

Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said :

A man will go to one hundred virgins in one day – i.e., in Paradise.

[ Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 367 ]

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (RA) :

Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said :

The lowest of the people of Paradise in status will be a man whose face Allaah will turn away from the Fire towards Paradise, and make a shady tree appear before him. Then he will enter his house and his two wives from among al-hoor al-‘ayn will enter after him. They will say: ‘Praise be to Allah Who has created you for us and us for you.’ And he will say: ‘No one has been given the like of that which I have been given.

[ Narrated by Muslim, 188 ]

Al-Haafiz said : The apparent meaning is that the least that will be given to each of them will be two wives.

Thirdly :

The second mistake is the questioner’s saying that hoor al-‘ayn will serve the man. This is not correct, rather the ones who will serve the people of Paradise will be boys of everlasting youth. Allaah (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning) :

And round about them will (serve) boys of everlasting youth. If you see them, you would think them scattered pearls

[ al-Insaan 76 : 19 ]

Hoor al-‘ayn will be wives of the men in Paradise, in addition to their wives from among the people of this world. Allaah (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning) :

So (it will be). And We shall marry them to Hoor (fair females) with wide lovely eyes

[ ad-Dukhaan 44 : 54 ]

They will recline (with ease) on thrones arranged in ranks. And We shall marry them to Hoor (fair females) with wide lovely eyes

[ at-Thoor 52 : 20 ]

Fourthly :

The misunderstanding is when the questioner says: “This to me does not seem like a fair concept for the women, to share their husbands in this way.”

Fairness or justice is to be found in the rulings of sharee’ah, not in what a person thinks who does not know sharee’ah and its rulings, let alone the reasons behind them.

The sister who is asking this question thinks that the jealousy in her heart, and what it leads to of depression and sorrow will remain with her in Paradise, but this is not correct, and this is why there is this misunderstanding in her question.

Allaah (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning) :

And We shall remove from their breasts any (mutual) hatred or sense of injury (which they had, if at all, in the life of this world); rivers flowing under them, and they will say: ‘All the praises and thanks be to Allaah, Who has guided us to this, and never could we have found guidance, were it not that Allaah had guided us! Indeed, the Messengers of our Lord did come with the truth.’ And it will be cried out to them: ‘This is the Paradise which you have inherited for what you used to do’

[ al-A’raaf 7 : 43 ]

There is nothing but joy and happiness in Paradise; there is no room for hatred and rancour in the hearts of the people of Paradise. Hoor al-‘ayn are something which Allaah (SWT) has created to honour the people of Paradise and to increase their delight. Moreover a man will be given the strength of one hundred men for intercourse, so the large number will not have any effect on a woman, and her feelings towards her co-wives and her husband’s concubines will not be like her feelings in this world.

It was narrated that Zayd ibnu Arqam (RA) :

Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said to me :

A man in Paradise will be given the strength of one hundred men in eating, drinking, desire and intercourse.

A Jewish man said :

The one who eats and drinks will need to relieve himself.

Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said to him :

The way in which one of them will relieve himself will be by means of sweat which will come out through his pores, and thus the food in his stomach will be digested.

Do they then seek the judgement of (the days of) Ignorance ? And who is better in judgement than Allaah for a people who have firm Faith ?

[ al-Maa’idah 5 : 50 ]

[ Narrated by Ahmad, 18827; classed as saheeh by Ibn Hibbaan, 16/443; and by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1627 ]

It was narrated from Anas (RA) :

Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said :

The believer in Paradise will be given such-and-such strength for intercourse.

It was said :

O Allah’s Messenger, will he really be able to do that ?

Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said :

He will be given the strength of a hundred (men).

[ Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2536; classed as saheeh by Ibn Hibbaan, 16/413; and by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 8106 ]

And Allaah knows best.
